Faith Organizations Urge Protecting Public Lands
As stewards of God's creation, we are asked to practice stewardship of the land. And as people of faith, we have been outspoken on the need for religious freedom. The reduction of these two monuments, which were designated because of their ecological significance, diminishes our ability to be good caretakers of God's creation. And, the reduction of Bears Ears in particular, which was the first ever national monument designated at the request of the native American community, negatively impacts the ability of tribes to perform their sacred ceremonies. These special places, as well as all national monuments, were designated through the use of the Antiquities Act, an important tool used by both Republican and Democrat presidents to designate places of ecological and cultural importance.
Jewish, Evangelical and Christian groups opposed Trump's actions to reduce Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments. In February 2020, religious groups opposed finalized management plans for Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante. In January 2019, Jewish leaders urged Trump to reverse course. These statements follow on the heels of faith organizations responding to the Trump Administration's executive order on the Antiquities Act including a statement by Creation Justice Ministries. In a letter to President Trump, prominent Jewish leaders call for protecting Bears Ears National Monument and the Antiquities Act.
