Jewish Organizations and the Environment

The values of respect and care for the natural world can be expressed and practiced by any religious organization and in any area of religious life, for the environment is not a “special interest” or a hobby for the few, but the created web of life through which every one of us is upheld, sustained, and nourished, spiritually as well as physically. Yet it is helpful to have places and organizations where environmental concerns are highlighted and made a special focus of attention and activity. Among these are Jewish congregations that have made care for creation a comprehensive priority, and organizations that have made connecting Judaism and the environment a core part of their mission.

Jewish Environmental Organizations

  • COEJL's network of Regional Affiliates and other local organizations serve as a vital source of community-based environmental education, action and advocacy, involving synagogues, schools, Jewish community centers, camps, and other local Jewish organizations in a wide range of environmental activities.
  • Shomrei Adamah ("Guardians of the Earth") promotes the connection between ecology and Jewish tradition through education, religious practice, activism, and social events in the greater Washington, D.C., area.
  • Adam va-Adamah  ("Humans and the Earth") is a regional affiliate of the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life (COEJL), dedicated to educating British Columbians about Judaism's deeply-rooted environmental values.
