Statements on the Environment
- The International Catholic-Jewish Liaison
Committee, “A Common Declaration on the
Environment,” 1998
Concern
for the environment has led both Catholics and
Jews to reflect on the concrete implications of
their belief in God, Creator of all things. In
turning to their sacred scriptures, both have
found the religious and moral foundations for
their obligation to care for the environment.
While they may differ in interpretations of some
texts or in their methodological approaches, Jews
and Catholics have found such broad agreement
on certain fundamental values that they are able
to affirm them together. Read

- The Declaration of the Mission to Washington,
signed by 150 scientists and religious leaders,
1992
Despite the seriousness of this
crisis, we are hopeful. We humans, in spite
of our faults, can be intelligent, resourceful,
compassionate, prudent and imaginative.
We have access to great reservoirs of moral
and spiritual courage. Deep within us stirs
a commitment to the health, safety and future
of our children. Understanding that the
world does not belong to any one nation
or generation, and sharing a spirit of utmost
urgency, we dedicate ourselves to undertake
bold action to cherish and protect the environment
of our planetary home. Read

- A Statement by Religious Leaders at the Summit
on Environment, 1991
It is what God made and
beheld as good that is under assault. The
future of this gift so freely given is in
our hands, and we must maintain it as we have
received it. This is an inescapably religious
challenge. We feel a profound and urgent call
to respond with all we have, all we are, and
all we believe. Read
the complete statement.
- An Open Letter to the Religious Community
by 32 internationally eminent scientists, 1990
Mindful of our common responsibility,
we scientists many of us long engaged in
combating the environmental crisis urgently
appeal to the world religious community to
commit, in word and deed, and as boldly as
is required, to preserve the environment of
the Earth. Read
