An Evangelical Church Discovers Creation Care cont.

Fellowship Church
Knoxville, TN
Evangelical Free Church of America

For four months the group planned their goals, statement of purpose and outline for the 12-week class, “Biblical Perspectives on Environmental Stewardship,” crafting an original curriculum composed of Scripture, commentaries, books and articles on Christianity and the environment. The class highlighted the obscuring impact of sin, human-centered worldviews and consumerism and the effects of these on creation.

Gradually, the impact of the class showed up around the church: in recycling bins, the support of the pastor, and the discussion sparked among the congregation. As a result of their efforts, the group presented a successful white paper to the church’s Elder Board, which affirmed the biblical principles of their activism, sermons on creation care are now frequent, and the pastor has decided to dedicate a chapter of his new book on ecclesiology to the role of the church in protecting the environment.
