Caring for Creation Committee cont.

Reformed Church of New Paltz
New Paltz, New York

But for this church, creation care is not a theme for only one week out of the year. Meeting monthly, the Caring for Creation committee has programmed a host of wonderful activities, guided by the maxim "think globally and act locally."

Enjoying God's creation, they have gone hiking together, co-sponsored an interfaith canoe trip to explore the local watershed, and adopted a highway. Sharing real concern and important environmental information, members write articles for each church newsletter. The committee has also grown beyond activities and education into tangible actions: serving fair trade, organic, shade grown coffee; gradually decreasing the use of Styrofoam; and converting the church to energy efficient light bulbs. As the committee moves further into the community, it joins the local clergy association at an ecumenical table and has donated energy efficient light bulbs to a hospital in Honduras.

James O'Dowd, Chairperson of the Caring for Creation Committee, believes that the group's work prompts some individuals to be more involved in the life of the church and encourages church members to engage with others in the outside community. In addition, he says, "The work of the committee has demonstrated to many the importance and relevancy of the moral leadership role the Church can play in the long-term struggle to protect and defend God's air, water, and natural resources as the birthright of future generations."
