Tuv Ha-Aretz – Jewish CSAs

Hazon, New York, NY and National

Hazon is a non-profit Jewish organization based in New York City, but with members across the US and beyond the nation’s borders.  Their primary mission is to create healthier and more sustainable Jewish communities by connecting people to the land through local agriculture and outdoor adventures.

Hazon has encouraged Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) through their program Tuv Ha’Aretz, which means both "Good for the land” and "Good from the land", and reflects Hazon's commitment to sustainable farming and eating.  Starting in 2004 with just one Jewish community supporting a CSA farm, their outreach has grown to 18 communities and 18 partner farms in 9 states in 2008.  About 500 households, representing 1500 people participated in Tuv Ha-Aretz CSAs in 2007, consuming 100,000 lbs. of food and contributing over $200,000 to local farmers.  These CSAs are an important means to support local farms, thereby staving off development on agricultural land; connect people to the source of their food and the individuals who grow it, increasing a sense of community; and provide wholesome, organic produce and kosher meats to Jewish homes, generating healthier lives.

On of the more popular annual events that grew out of the relationships that were created between the Jewish communities and the farmers are the Sukkot Farm trips, where CSA members spend a day gleaning in the farmer’s fields (the food collected is donated to local food shelves/kitchens) and building a Sukkah booth at the farm, decorating it with the produce they collect.  Observing this Torah-based autumn harvest festival on a local farm brings these ancient customs of tzedakah (charity) and land-based celebrations to life for those who live more urban lives.  It also provides the opportunity for several generations to work and learn together as an extended family and alongside their neighbors.

Hazon also runs various charitable environmental bike rides in both the US and Israel, along with educational, multi-day hiking events.
