Since 1997, the Ellin and Harold Lawson Youth Institute has sought to bring the most creative minds in Jewish education to the youth of Detroit. This annual retreat provides students win an intensive, hands-on encounter with Jewish values. In 2004 the Institute chose as its focus the value of tikkun olam (repairing the world).

Students, ranging from seventh through twelfth grade, participated in the 28-hour retreat with the goal of then sharing what they learned with the larger congregational community. Students earn 18 community service hours for their participation.

The Institute was held at the Lansing Zoo, where students could get a behind the scenes look at the animals, many of which are members of endangered species. Participants were taken through four progressive sessions, that explored not only which species were endangered, but also the related endangered habitats and resources upon which these species depend. Then students examined what Jewish tradition teaches about our responsibility to act as stewards of creation, and then what concrete actions they, as individuals can do to help.
