Taking Recycling to the Streets

Englewood Presbyterian Church, Homewood, AL

Presbyterians promoting curbside recycling in Homewood, AL are working with the city to increase awareness. Englewood Presbyterian Church members felt that they city needed to do more to promote recycling. They set up a meeting with Homewood Mayor Barry McCulley and managers from the city’s recycling contractor, Allied Waste, to discuss its promotion of the curbside residential recycling program. Through their discussions, they learned that the city’s agreement with Allied Waste required the contractor to promote the service to the community twice a year, but Allied Waste was failing to meet its obligation.

Church member Rick Frennea wanted to help keep Allied Waste accountable to its commitment to promote recycling. He designed an advertisement for the recycling program, which the company ran in the Homewood Times, a quarterly publication of the Homewood Area Chamber of Commerce. The advertisement encouraged curbside recycling and recognized Edgewood Presbyterian Church for its role in promoting the program.

Church members want to get even deeper into the recycling business by starting new advocacy efforts, according to Rev. Sid Burgess, the church’s pastor.  “From this small beginning, we hope to get the city to expand the recycling program to make it accessible to residents who live in multi-family dwellings.” They also plan to advocate for a new hazardous waste recycling program for the community.
