Pedaling to Pray: Christians Bike to Church to Curb Climate Change

Jeff Street Baptist Community, Louisville, KY

Anointing the head with oil is a long-standing Christian tradition—but what about anointing with sunscreen? Sunscreen anointing is part of the new “Blessing of the Bikes” service at Jeff Street Baptist Community at Liberty in Louisville, KY.

The service is part of the church’s annual Earth Day celebration held in a city park near the church. People are encouraged to ride their bikes to the service rather than driving. Member Dan Trabue says that during the service, “our many cyclists are anointed with sunscreen, prayed over, and otherwise blessed and encouraged.”

He notes that nearly half of the church members bike to church for the service, dramatically reducing the church’s carbon emissions for that day. Efforts like this represent not simply a special service, but rather an active response to the Christian call for churches to curb climate change.
