In a community where the average household income is $26,700, All Peoples Church (ELCA) of Milwaukee, WI is reclaiming a garden, forming partnerships with local urban farming organizations and offering education in order to provide healthy, fresh food sources to all people. The church is located in the Harambee neighborhood, where the population is 63% African-American, 11% Hispanic and 19% Caucasian. 62% of the people are renters. There are several fast food restaurants in the area, but there is a limited supply of affordable fresh food in local grocery stores. Recognizing that renters often don’t have land for gardening, the church has developed a community garden and offers a community lunch and Bible study program with produce from a community-supported agriculture program.
They are planning a trip to the farm so that participants can see and touch the fields where the food is grown. “Healthy food is not a privilege but a right,” according to Pastor Steve Jerbi. “Our income will not define us, nor will it determine our diet. With a prophetic vision we are transforming our community and our approach to food.”
The church is building partnerships with gardening organizations, local co-op grocers and with local farms. In addition, members are teaching children to tend crops, investing in their neighborhoods. “We are taking food generally reserved for those of privilege and making it available to all people,” said Jerbi.
Though the city of Milwaukee doesn’t usually sell vacant lots to non-profit organizations, the church is looking to purchase land to expand the garden program. In the meantime, members are claiming lots as “sacred ground” and tending them on their own. They have dreams of turning the church parking lot into a farmers market where neighbors gather to celebrate and play.
