In Congregations

Congregations are the heart of religious life, and a healthy congregation embodies its faith across all areas of activity, from the most sacred to the most mundane. Worship, education, the design of buildings and the care of its grounds, weekly operations and special events, community service and advocacy -- all provide concrete and public ways to say: "This is what we believe..."

The conviction that the earth is God's creation and that we are charged with its care and keeping is no exception. And what a rich variety of ways there are for expressing it! The faithful bring a diversity of gifts, traditions, and concerns to the particular places where they gather. That diversity is reflected in the many ways that they have found to express their care for and celebration of the whole community of life.

Ecological responsibility, and environmental justice are dimensions of every aspect of congregational life. Any facet of the faith-community's life can express a creative and life-affirming response to our wounded planet and its inhabitants. Whatever your area of responsibility, you can work with others to integrate these concerns into the life of your congregation.
