Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life
Statement on Bureau of Land Management Methane Rule
December 2016

As the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life, representing a broad swath of the North American Jewish community, we express our enthusiastic support for the Bureau of Land Management’s Methane Rule.

Methane pollution, which wastes natural gas resources, drives climate change and contributes to health issues, is preventable. The new rule will update 30-year-old regulations with more efficient and cost-saving practices.

From the Talmud through today, Judaism understands that sometimes stringent regulations are needed to balance private interests and economic concerns on the one hand, with the public welfare and our collective health on the other.  The BLM methane rule fits squarely within that tradition of appropriate, righteous, spiritually-sanctioned guidance.
